Melbourne’s favourite sons are now on to album number three, and their continued musical progression brings them ever closer to the classic record they are threatening to make. ‘Zonoscope’ isn’t quite the fully finished product, but it’s pretty damned close thanks to songs like ‘Need You Now’, their best and emotive yet, and ‘Take Me Out’, a breezy radio pop number. What is clear here is the band’s musical confidence, but also their willingness to spread their wings and make a few structural experiments. The most obvious of these is ‘Sun God’, a fifteen minute closing track that suggests the band have been listening to a lot of Krautrock and Lindstrom of late. It doesn’t quite develop enough, but the deepness of its rhythm suggests Cut Copy might venture down this road to greater effect in the future. For now, ‘Zonoscope’ is a real grower, getting into its stride after the first few listens to reveal some very fine electro-pop music indeed.
