Every so often an album appears out of the blue and knocks me off the old perch, loin-cloth a distant memory and galaxies exploding in the old brain-pan. Such is the case with this debut set from Toronto DJ-producer Kenny, who’s actually been recording since the early 90s, appearing on Roger Sanchez’s Narcotic and as half of Method Men and Unabombers with musical collaborator Mario. This is his first artist album, a stunning barrage of organic techno which often sounds like it’s happening as the thoughts enter his cranium. On first listen, Carl Craig most springs to mind in the way grooves are spaced and dislocated, sometimes created without obvious drums. Take ‘The Keeper’, which rides on monolithic Basic Channel-style metallic riffs before symphonic strings enter the fray creating the maximum impact with the minimum of ingredients. ‘Dance 2 Da House’ is based around a huge live bass which thrashes and heaves like a huge funky snake on a rockabilly groove while ‘Logan’s Run’ strips down even further with just melodic and keyboards. ‘Can You Feel’ taps the original house music spirit with Kenny’s vocals, closing one of the most startlingly-different and downright exciting electronic albums which will emerge this or any other year.
