“I can hear everything. It’s everything time.” So goes the opening quote for the Brooklyn quartet’s first venture on 4AD, and by all respects it’s a bit of a corker. It needs a few listens, though, especially as it opens with an 11-minute epic. ‘Glass Jar’ takes a while to get itself established, but turns into a wondrous, shimmering piece of music, shot through with Lizzi Bougatsos’ helium-inflected vocals and stabbing synth patterns. As the album unfolds the warm textures appeal, and Hot Chip vocalist Alexis Taylor brings a typically yearning approach to ‘Romance Layers’, while other tracks combine a heady, treble-rich sound with fully loaded percussion. If you’ve taken to recent Animal Collective stuff this is for you – and represents something a bit different.
