Jenny is Jenny Lewis, the prolific vocalist we associate with Rilo Kiley, and Johnny is Johnathan Rice, her partner in more ways than one it would seem. Together the two sing in seamless close harmony, with their beautifully proportioned pop songs full of good tunes and lyrics that either tug at the heartstrings, or visit the dark side. Slower numbers are graceful and lightly sung, but it’s in the dreamy pop of songs like Big Wave where the duo really come good. Not all of it is consonant harmony and subtle euphoria, with Animal and New Yorker Cartoon exploring a sensitive underbelly, but this is by and large a winning album that deserves to be put on repeat for some time.
