“I love making records. Music is my drug and I’m a junkie. A funky junkie!” That’s an excerpt from the press release for this album, and it sums up the infectious enthusiasm that Shawn Lee has for his craft, as he delivers another immaculate set of well worn grooves. Lee lives and breathes funk music, and the classic feel to jams such as ‘The Definition Of Funk’ and ‘Boomwack’ feel authentic. What works just as well here though are the slower jams, ‘Well Hung’ and ‘Spy Seduction’, that get beneath the surface to something a bit more emotive. Listening to ‘Reel To Reel’ is like hearing a collection of theme tunes you heard back in the 70s, but there’s a nice contemporary twist in there too, that means they won’t go out of date.
