Moritz Von Oswald Trio – ‘Fetch’ – (Honest Jon’s)

‘Fetch’ has just four tracks, an indication that Moritz von Oswald and friends are looking to stretch out their structures. Here they sit at the junction of techno, dub and contemporary jazz, flitting between styles without ever threatening to become bogged down by structural confines. If that sounds a bit lofty it’s not meant to, as this is an ambitious album that also works as atmospheric music to have in the mid-foreground. There is a tension running through the music that keeps the listener on their toes, and the trio seem to know instinctively when to hold back and when to push on. ‘Dark’, the shortest of the four jams at just over seven minutes, is slower but tingling with atmospherics, while elsewhere there is a greater urgency that betrays the influence of Detroit techno. ‘Jam’ makes a fine opening track, setting the scene for subtle invention and craft that is at work throughout an extremely impressive achievement.
