DETROIT BEATDOWN REMIXES
THIRD EAR

The Carl Craig remix of Theo Parrish’s ‘Falling Up’ is already huger than huge, to the point of being bootlegged before its upcoming twelve-inch unleashment. Over a steady plink-plonk rhythm, the simple, nagging riffs build in that unique C.C. fashion Wild pitch style to create a clutching-the-ceiling dancefloor stormer which causes similar devastation to when, say, Plastikman first dropped ‘Spastik’. It’s only the tip of the iceberg, as this sublimely brilliant compilation testifies. It’s all reworked tracks from 2002’s ‘Detroit Beatdown Volume One’, six unreleased. Detroit Beatdown is the term coined by Mike ‘Agent X’ Clark, Norm Talley and veteran DJ Delano Smith to desribe their inimitabnle brand of deep house, acid, techno and jazz freedom. Every treatment is a highlight; sympathetic, spiritual and eternally groovy. For example, Charles Spencer takes Clark’s ‘Let Your Lover’ and plunges into the delirious, jazz-house territory by explored by such as the Burrell Brothers and Wayne Gardner on labels like Nu Groove and Strictly Rhythm in the early 90s. But there are many great moments in a set which is a departure and delight for not only Detroit watchers but anyone who delights in the deep and funky.
