Various Artists – ‘Hamburg Elektronisch Vol. 02: Von House Zu House’ – (Hafendisko)

Last year’s peek beneath the surface of Hamburg electronic music from Hafendisko was a really good eye opener – so much so that for the second volume the label have spread the goodness out to double compilation length. It’s a good move, for there is some high quality music here that shows the German city off as the ideal house complement to Berlin’s techno. Beats are tougher on the second set of unmixed tracks, and the solid deep house from Seidensticker & Salour, Suburb, Kruse & Nuernberg and Vincenzo has a tough edge in the kick drum area. On the first disc there is plenty of variety, from the cool opening of RVDS’ ‘Lunar Eclipse’, while the madcap ‘Salon der Idioten’ from School of Zuversicht towards the end of CD2 shows a willingness to throw the rule book a good distance away. A thoroughly engaging set of tunes, with a decent number of exclusives too!
