Nervous Nitelife: Tom Stephan
Nervous

‘Superchumbo – assaulting dancefloors with deadly beats’. So reads the front of Tom Stephan’s latest – and it is an assault of sorts, using the big chunky sound he’s come to be associated with to generate plenty of energy. There’s a brashness to the vocals used here, and a jumped up, adrenalin powered set of beats to match – but for some reason this is a mix that fails to engage. That’s despite a few catchy asides in Afrojack’s ‘Polkadots’ and Rico Tubbs’ ‘Born To Bounce’, but these end up being annoying rather than anything genuinely uplifting – especially the latter, with its novelty ‘bounce little kitty’ hook. A few Stephan mixes of Diplo productions keep things going towards the end, but this doesn’t unfortunately lever itself into memorable dancefloor action – unless you’re completely out of it. Maybe that’s the point!
