Some background first: Midnight Mike reportedly procured a haul of legal magic mushrooms in 2004 and, suitably inspired, set about making a cover version of Throbbing Gristle’s 1978 industrial-disco kneesup ‘United’. The track last saw the light of day in 1992 when Genesis P-Orridge re-recorded it and Andrew Weatherall’s Sabres Of Paradise converted it into a sweeping epic which became the first release on the label of the same name. Mike remains truer to TG’s original plan to ‘produce a disco-based song that people could fall in love with’, producing a sleazed-up vocal and electro-vamp groove lashed with that distinctive sireny noise. There’s also a deadly floor-friendly remix by Naum Gabo, whose Jonnie is half of the awesome Optimo. There’s a whole album in store of Mike’s inimitable covers which can only be big fun if it’s anything like this vibrant single.
