DMX CREW
COLLAPSE OF THE WAVE FUNCTION VOLUME 4/5
REPHLEX

Some deep theorising about sound wave functions accompanies Ed DMX’s latest outing on Aphex’s label. It’s certainly interesting and occasionally intoxicating in its sonic explorations while managing to inject some vital humour into the Quantum Physics lessons over two track-stuffed twelves. The most obvious comparisons are Moroder and Kraftwerk, especially on the first record. Obviously, electro is another easy option. ‘Reverse Tachyon Beam’ is a typical track title. The second disc gets under way with ‘William the Conqueror’ coming on like the Human League giving a London bus tour in Norman times! Then it’s back to Moroder-plus-blips and tracks with names like ‘Brain Location Service’. If the listener was expected to delve into this with chin-stroking earnest it would be Fast Show material but, approached in the right spirit, it’s a sometimes fascinating ride through the cerebral universe. Or something. The full album and its retrospective bonus CD will be fun.
