After their brilliant rework of Gene Kelly’s ‘Singing In The Rain’ (backing a clever car ad this top 20 single should have hit the number one spot), Mint Royal are back with another cheeky breakbeat makeover of a well known song. Released in 1982 Wham!’s first single ‘Wham Rap!’ combined Michael Jackson’s clean-cut soul with NYC’s emerging rapping craze and instantly launched George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley as the new savour of pop. As usual the result is neatly put together, if only a little gimmicky (kinda Fat Boy Slim going booty-crazy), but there’s no question this could do well on the airwaves. For peak-time action Georgie Sunshine’s Audio Bitches remix (who?) borrows a huge leaf from Benny Benassi’s ‘Satisfaction’ book and turns out a fairly unimaginative yet merciless thumper that will work for those up for a bit of fun.
