SUBWAY
44110 / PERSUASION
SOUL JAZZ

Michael Kirkman & Alan James are Subway, and they’ve already released a string of top notch singles, along with their critically acclaimed album “Empty Head”, through Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label. So it comes as a bit of a surprise that the new Subway single is on Soul Jazz, mind you the Sounds Of The Universe posse have always had good taste, and they are certainly not shy of dipping their toes in uncharted territories. “44110” has got a certain Death In Vegas flavour to it, as driving bass rides on slightly off kilter drumming, while fuzzy keyboard riffs jostle with distorted atmospherics, creating a slightly sleazy experience. Over on the flip “Persuasion” takes more of an Italo / Dutch electro rave route, layering hands in the air ecstatic synth riffs over old skool machine rhythms. Both sides have got a familiar ring to them, but they also sound very fresh. Clever stuff.
