A longtime scene player, it’s always good to hear new releases from Bristol’s Rob Smith (of Smith & Mighty fame, amongst many other credits). Smith always manage to fix his productions so they can happily appeal to the non-breaks heads as much as the breaks crews, as he does with “Loveage”. Initially heard on Tayo’s Fabric Live Mix, it rides a classic reggae horn riff to dynamite effect, fusing the breaks and skanking rhythm to generate a dub that’s likely to see rewind after rewind. Add in the chants, vocoders and occasional sirens, and it’s more adrenalin charged than a winning lottery ticket. Drum Monkey’s dub the sample out even further, but add plenty of bass and rework the drums to create a more London flava’d stepper. Class that you can’t afford to miss.
