Expecting the unexpected is easy when it comes to Visionquest and a philosophy that always pays off when it comes to their latest release. You’ll love this from the second it starts with opening track ‘Lipstick & Lace’ oozing sentimental, funky syncopation that can only be a joy to dance too. The words name-check the politics of nightlife as the music leans with a definite nod to eighties new wave complete with commanding piano chords and stylish, razor-sharp beats. ‘Not In Your Nature’ continues to explore the theme, this time with more in the way of smoky vocals and striking, atmospheric keyboards. Which leaves the title track ‘New Ships’ to pick up the pace again with its addictive sequence of joyous notes proving to be uplifting, in every sense of the word.
