Cosmic Cowboys – Perseus – (Time Has Changed)

We’ve profiled the Time Has Changed label on these pages many times, long ago marking them out back then as a label of real distinction. The music on their latest comes from a relatively unknown quantity in Cosmic Cowboys, an Italian duo from Venice no less. A release that could well go down as the imprint’s best for some time, it’s got more than enough in its locker to suggest it’ll leave an impression wherever it’s let out of its cage.

The title track, in original form at least, maintains a real kitchen sink approach, not least because of its sporadic and fully-charged first few minutes where the listener is left wondering just when it’s all going to subside a bit. But when the dramatic sweeps barge in, it’s clear that it’s all part of a carefully executed plan. A difficult track to pigeonhole, it’s just a great track that’s full of drama, poise and diversity from the offset.

Betoko’s approach to the original is one that’s far more stripped back than we anticipated. Leaning on only a smidgen of the original, he uses the synths to build up a frenzied atmosphere, while the rest of the zippy vibes only add to the overall ambiance. Top draw stuff from everyone involved here.
