Peven Everett, Chicago legend returns with his first single release of 2013. One Way Ticket / I Just Wanna Make You Happy is the first double single, taken from his anticipated new album “King Of Hearts” out soon on Makin’ Moves Records. ‘One Way Ticket’ is an absolutely joyus piece of bumping soulful house. Peven’s voice has that Stevie/Donny tone that you could listen too all day long without ever getting board of. The musical into drops with a light samba feel layered with jazzy chords and immediately sets your mood to happy and feet to dancing. But when Peven’s voice glides in accompanied with flutes and pumping horns your left with the same feelings that only the masters of the jazz funk could muster back in the 70s. The track climaxes with uplighting ad-libs that Marvin would be proud of, a master class in what Peven calls ‘Power Soul’. His background of working with jazz greats such as Betty Carter, Wynton and Branford Marsalis is evident here, but always keeping that four four glue to holding the track together. ‘I Just Want To Make You Happy’ is a different piece of music, showcasing the trademark musicianship by Peven, performing all the instruments himself, with a salute to the golden era of soul with a beautiful light and breezy groove topped with this mavericks blend of jazz and soul. The only way to play these songs is on repeat.
