M.I.A.

An underground hit when surfacing in limited quantities last year, it had all manner of jocks – from Pete Tong to Gilles Peterson – getting a bit excited about it. Truthfully, though, it might not mean much outside of a club soundsystem, mainly because it’s the beats that make the record fly. Sri Lankan M.I.A.’s mockney rhyming seriously grates with repeated exposure – karaoke style nonsense repeated over and over until you’re left wanting to amputate your own ears with a spoon. Still, for the beats (and there are instrumentals fortunately) it’s well worth checking.
