Skrillex – the Grammy’s electronic superstar

Dubstep superstar cleans up at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards

Electronic superstar Skrillex who perhaps surprised some by notching up five nominations for the 54th Annual 2012 Grammy Awards, walked home last night in Hollywood with three gongs including Best Remixed Recording, Non Classical for his remix of ‘Cinema’ by Benny Benassi.

Skrillex was in attendance and took to the stage reading a lengthy list of thank-yous from his cell phone at the afternoon’s non-televised ceremony. In addition to thanking his management and label teams, Skrillex put his Grammy win in perspective, saying, “this is really crazy for me, man. I made this song in my bedroom when I was living illegally in a warehouse in downtown L.A. I made that song with a blown speaker.”

Skrillex beat an impressive list of electronic dance music artists, including deadmau5, Daft Punk, and Afrojack. In his speech, he gave a shout-out to “everyone in the EDM community. This means a lot to us… I think it’s awesome that we’re all getting recognized.”

David Guetta had won the Best Remixed Recording Grammy the previous two years. “He’s extremely talented and I’m very happy for him,” Guetta told MTV. “It’s a statement. I think it’s really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as ‘an artist.’ Not as a ‘dance’ artist, you know? I think that it’s good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting.”

Later that evening which Adele dominated winning 6 Awards, Skrillex also scooped Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album. Elsewhere for dance music at the ceremony which was hosted by LL Cool J, there were wins for Cee Lo Green, Chris Brown, Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Deadmau5 however came to the event prepared. Not to take away from his giant mouse head, Joel Zimmerman was also sporting a t-shirt with the phone number — (626) 319-1039 — and the words “u mad bro?” Those curious enough to call the number would have reached his fellow nominee Skrillex. Or, more likely, his voice mail. “Haha @deadmau5 just wore my phone number on his fokin shirt on tv gotta retire this phone,” Skrillex tweeted once he caught wind of the prank.
