Orbital were that rare thing in dance music – they made classic singles, and albums that didn’t sound ten years out of date the moment the euphoria wore off. Not just one album, but a whole series of them. So, a few years after their decision to disband, Paul Hartnoll displays where he’s been heading in the years since. The deftly titled “Patchwork Guilt” starts with a melancholy blend of warping synths and melodies, creating a relaxed, textured intro before the electro beats and keyboard line scythe through it. Manages to create a weird sensation of edginess and relaxation at the same time. “Gloopy” is more of a bouncy electronica thing that cuts operatic voices and heavy metal guitars into the mix. Neither side is straight forward but they both capture you with repeated listens. A new album is scheduled for Spring 2007 which could be interesting.
