Back to Mine with Sean Moriguchi

A list of your top 10 all time favourite home listening records with a sentence or two about each.

1. Commix – Be True

From the sidechain compression on the vocals to the organic piano, this song is one you can sit back and relax to and yet at the same time it can tear up a dance floor. Not many songs can fit those two settings as well as this one does.

Commix - Be True [HQ]

2. OC & Verde – Maasai

Absolutely love the synth patch on this one, pretty sure it’s Diva as I use that synth myself and have crafted a very similar sound using it. Moreover the Arabic vocals are a nice twist and a nice change from producer’s sampling black soul singers.

OC & Verde - Maasai

3. Maribou State – Manila

Love the main riff on this song. Has been layered to perfection. Perfect home listening record, especially with some of my old band mates who aren’t into heavy Techno.

Maribou State - 'Manila'

4. Cornelius – Ghost in the Shell Arise (Opening Title)

Being one of my favourite Japanese producers Cornelius always bring new ideas to the table. The power-cut clip inserted 2:53 is genius and completely catches the listener off-guard. I’m also a fan of the original Ghost in the Shell manga which has many beautiful samples throughout the film.

5. Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy

I remember chatting the Daddy G in my sister kitchen when she was studying at Bristol Uni years back. Big influence to me from early. and to be honest I could name a number of their tracks to fit in this playlist.

Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

6. DJ Shadow – Midnight In A Perfect World

That Phased Fender Rhodes! Always wanted one of those electric pianos. Maybe one day I’ll stop using my Omnisphere library and get one….

DJ Shadow - Midnight In A Perfect World

7. Mikki Funk – Take you There (Do You Remember)?

Musical and Sonically this one’s flawless. Beautiful composition aligned with soft vocals and live guitar, which to my knowledge he played in himself. Top record and a good friend of mine from when we studied music together in college.

Mikki Funk - Take You There Do You Remember?

8. Queens of the Stone Age – Auto Pilot

Being one of the first songs I learned on the guitar this track always has a soft spot for me. Moreover it was recorded in one of my favourite studios in the world Rancho De La Luna, situated in the middle of the Nevada dessert.

Queens of the Stone Age - Auto Pilot

9. Klashneckoff – Jamrock Takeover

Probably my favourite UK rapper of all time. Jamaican samples from Damian Marley’s release make for perfect chilled home listening.

Klashnekoff - Jamrock Takeover

10. Ruff Squad – XTC Vs Misty Cold

This is a track that I used to mix a lot on pirate radio a lot when I was 17 and it still moves me today. Can blatantly tell it was produced on Fruity Loops and I still love it.

Ruff Sqwad - XTC Vs Misty cold

the-thing400Sean Moriguchi – The Thing EP (Havana Banger)

London based Havana Banger is a tech house label that promotes fresh young talent. With their second release they do just that once more thanks to a brace of brilliant cuts from Sean Moriguchi. Moriguchi has released on labels like Recovery House Records, Outta Limits and Future Classics, and has picked up props from outlet like XLR8R as a result. He has been involved with music ever since his youth when he had jobs at Abbott Street Studios and worked on big commercials for brands like L’Oreal. After a biking accident he was left being able to do nothing but make music and now, as well as assisting renowned promotions company Pack London—who are affiliated with this label— run and promote various club nights around the UK, he is making waves with his beats.  ‘The Thing’ is a busy and bristling house tune with hard hitting and raw grooves. Big bass underpins wild synths and reverberating vocals bring a dehumanised feel to the track. It is a monstrous cut for the peak of the night and will really make an indelible mark on all who hear it. The fantastic ‘Frankenstein’ is another freaky affair that is high octane and attention grabbing. Lots of filters add real drama to the slamming grooves. Diva vocals fight for attention with sci-fi synths and the whole thing stimulates your every last synapse.
