Back to mine for a disco!
A couple of years ago, I did a back to mine feature for DMC, and it was a selection of chillout vibes. I was delighted to be asked again, and so this time, I’m reflecting what happens if you’re back on a Saturday night in the summer and we dig out the disco faves.
I’m an avid underground disco fan, which some may find surprising, but disco is the predecessor of house music, and I love my musical history. It helps you understand your music if you know where it has come from. So I could have picked 100 disco tracks or more, so was a bit of a squeeze to sort 10, and also I could have tried to be cool and pick some obscure and unkown stuff, but for me these are 10 of my faves that make me dance. Al be it some bad dad dancing.
Cerrone – Supernature
An absolute classic that has stood the test of time. Sophisticated coolness with plenty of power, and I love the vocal so much. Uber cool.
Loletta Holloway – Love Sensation
Sampled a gazillion times, but this track really is a monster. I discovered it when I first heard Balck Box – Ride On Time many moons ago, and have been hooked ever since. I also heard Nicky Siano play this the other year and it sounded even more epic than ever.
Shirley Lites – Heat You Up
I love this so much. The bassline, the vocal, oh everything. Pure class.
Class Action – Weekend
For me a real gem of gems. Gets me every time, singing at the top of my lungs.
The Joubert Singers – Stand On tHe Word (Larry Levan Mix Celestial Choir)
I didn’t like the is the first time I heard it. The kids choir like vocals freaked me out. But then I had to listen to it again. and again. Its truly bonkers, but its superb. And that piano… Mr Levan pushing the boundaries with this one.
Jago – I’m Going To Go (Frankie Knuckles Remix)
Apparently this was a Hacienda fave. I didn’t discover this until Pezz played me it in 3 Beat when we both worked there. I was instantly hooked.
George Kranz – Din Daa Daa
This is such an insane record. I love the way it stops, and teases. I love the vocal as the main melody. Powerful stuff.
Chaka Khan – Clouds
When I first starting getting house gigs in 1991 i used to play this, and I remember Desa from Bassheads bounding over with excitement, and since then its always been a fave of mine and Desa and I chat about this tune often!
Inner Life – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
Epic as can be. Absolutely beautiful. The build and structure of this track blows me away every time.
Rockers Revenge – Walking On Sunshine
It took me years to like this track. everybody loved it except me! And then about 5 years ago, the light switched on, and now i LOVEit,, and cant understand why I didn’t like it haha! A great dance floor record. Even if I was super slow at realising!
