Back to Mine with Maxxi Soundsystem

After hours grooving at the best after parties in the world

1. Orange Juice – Rip It Up
One of my favourite records, after party gold and I love the completely “out” of key guitar solo. The lyrics often pop in my head every time I abandon an idea in the studio too – in fact it’s top of the list now after having abandoned my first attempt at this chart.

2. Henry Mancini – Lujon
The incredibly lush strings in this get me every time. Cocktail?

3. PFM – One & Only
I spent a long period in my youth listening to jungle and drum and bass, a lot of it doesn’t stand the test of time but this tune in particular is still gold as is a lot of the Good Looking/Looking Good stuff.

4. Imagination – Just An Illusion (Lindstrom Vocal Remix)
Huge fan of Imagination – of course the originals are still fantastic but Lindstrom nails this remix by keeping everything good about the 12″ version and just giving it even more space.

5. LCD Soundsystem – 45:33 (Theo Parrish’s Space Cadet Remix)
Really wanted to include something from LCD in this chart – plenty to go for but with this track we get Theo tripping out for 8 minutes too; eyes closed time.

6. Quiet Village – Too High To Move
Matt (Edwards) actually played me this track back when he lived in Brighton before I knew anything about his Quiet Village project – I loved the movie score feel of the music that him and Joel were putting together – basically the result of some of the most hardcore record digging I’ve ever encountered.

7. Prince – Uptown
You can’t have an after party without Prince – if anyone has a problem with that – I’ll call you a cab.

8. Ramases – Life Child
OK this is slightly in the weirdness realm but I think you need a little of that after a night out…not sure it gets weirder than a Scottish plumber who believed he was the reincarnation of an Egyptian Pharaoh?

9. A Tribe Called Quest – Electric Relaxation
I was sharing an apartment right on Brighton seafront with some friends who were making Hip Hop, listening to them practise scratching drove me fucking crazy, but the parties we had hold some of the best memories with them pulling out tracks all night long. This one is a classic of course and for me it’s all about Q Tip’s voice.

10. Talking Heads – This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)
Surely the ultimate end of the after, after party record. This one seems to hold a special place in so many people’s collections, in Leeds for instance it has huge meaning as I found out when I dropped it innocently at an Asylum afterparty and everyone jumped on the tables and sung along – for me though it reminds me of my parents house, this one can bring a tear to your eye…
