Back To Mine with Winter Son

After hours grooving…

01. Deftones – ‘White Pony’

Absolutely bludgeoning stuff, but married so well with ethereal atmospherics and gripping tension. It was the soundtrack to my youth when it first came out.

02. Explosions In The Sky – ‘Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever’

This album is pretty much solely responsible for the way I write music today. There isn’t any other music out there that’s so incredibly intense yet so delicate.

03. Goldie – ‘Timeless’

I’ve always really loved all things DnB, but that first track kills everything! Goldie once said “there will never be a better drum and bass album than ‘Timeless’, you’ll just never beat it”, and I totally agree with him.

04. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – ‘Murder Ballads’

Nick Cave is probably my favourite storyteller of all time. ‘Murder Ballads’ isn’t for the squeamish, but it’s a good mood setter for a night of terror.

05. Dave Bixby – ‘Ode To Quetzalcoatl’

Me and Jozef K found this little treasure when we were taking a break in the studio. We ended up crawling through Discogs and stumbled upon it by chance. I fell in love with it and slowly became addicted.

06. Tricky – ‘Pre-Millennium Tension’

‘Makes Me Wanna Die’ from that album is pure soul crushing stuff. It’s one of those ‘stop what you’re doing and think’ pieces of music.

07. Ricardo Villalobos – ‘Alcachofa’

I try not to listen to too much house or techno at home as I feel I want to take in other influences when I’m sat listening to music, but I think this album really pushes over the limits of a standard electronic music record. It has all the emotion I ever need (check ‘Dexter’) and melodic bliss (check ‘I Try To Live’).

08. Nine Inch Nails – ‘The Downward Spiral’

If you ever want to hear someone bleeding sorrow and rage then just have a listen to this. It’s a true account of the pain one man went through in getting this record complete. There’s no bullshit in any of it.

09. Led Zeppelin – ‘Led Zeppelin IV’

…and after the darkness of Nine Inch Nails, it’s best to put this album on! It might come across as a little ‘cheesy’ at times, but if you dig a little deeper there’s some pretty batshit stuff going on here. It’s a daring record.

10. Thomas Bangalter – ‘Irreversible’

This probably isn’t one of my all time albums, but I thought I’d stick it in as I have huge respect for everything he does! Classic disco to death drone – it’s all in here. It can make the party go wild or stamp it firmly into the ground, depending on which track you put on first 😉

Jozef K & Winter Son ‘Dancing Chaos Star EP’ (Skint)
Two talented and experienced house heads in the form of Jozef K & Winter Son hook up for this fresh new EP on Skint.
It was in the hallowed bowels of Berghain that Winter Son (aka Ghosting Season/worriedaboutsatan member Thomas Ragsdale) met Sankeys resident DJ Jozef K, and since then the pair have been cooking up plenty of club ready greatness. They have released on labels like Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, Rebirth and New York’s Let’s Play House and now they take us on another trip through some proper hardware jams this time on the legendary Skint.
First up is title track ‘Dancing Chaos Star’, a deep, spiritual bit of house with buried basslines, organic and seductive vocal samples and a slinky sense of groove that percolates throughout, keeping you locked from start to finish. Then comes ‘Forbidden Ritual’, a slightly more unhinged track with skewed synth lines, well treated vocals and a sense of dark tension that rises up throughout. Jacking percussion and oodles of reverb make this a truly resonant cut that will no doubt fill an entire warehouse with sound.
Finally, ‘Strike The Shepherd & The Sheep Will Scatter’ is another spine tingling cut with dirty bass stabs, explosive percussive patterns and a raved up energy that will make floors really sweat in the coming months.
This is an EP that exudes class and quality and is another real winner from the minds of Jozef K & Winter Son.
Jozef K & Winter Son ‘Dancing Chaos Star EP’ is out 18th May 2015 on Skint.
