Adrian Lux

The Swedish superstar burning up the summer’s dancefloors

Welcome back to DMCWORLD Adrian, back in the limelight with your new single ‘Burning’ on Ultra Music out a few weeks ago. The track was remixed by the likes of Ivan Gough and Feenixpawl and features a brilliant video shot in New York. Let’s start with the video…http://youtu.be/9SyIyeNyJwM
…who was behind it?

“It was created by the talented Danish director Michael Christensen. I really liked their vision, it sounded like a cool take!!”

Your press people describe it as “romantic” – is that how you would describe it?!?

“Yes I guess it is, I mean it definitely sends a message of universal love. I like the New York vibe in it as well, feels like a place you want to be in!!”

The album dropped in April – now the dust has settled, are you happy with it and it’s reaction from your fans?

“Yes it has been really positive. I wanted to make a personal sounding album so I work mostly with close friends. I was nervous about releasing it but it has been a great reaction.”

The lyrics behind ‘Teenage Crime’ are autobiographical in a way, it told a time when you and your friends were going out clubbing all of the time not wanting the night to end. What sort of places and DJs would we have found you getting smashed at/to?

“It was a lot of techno/grime/hip hop and stuff like that back then, we listened a lot to our Stockholm local heroes and we also did a lot of gigs ourselves. I was a lot into John Digweed, Layo & Bushwacka, Eric Prydz and stuff like that.”

You have said that you enjoyed a very different record collection in your living room compared to your classmates when you were growing up due to your parents musical tastes. What sort of artists are we talking about?

“A lot of of different genres and artist, a lot of punk rock like Iggy Pop, a lot of Dub reggae like Aswad, Massive Attack was also very present, I can go on forever but it was basically a great collection.”

What was your first break into the music industry?

“I released my first single ‘Strawberry’ back in 2008, It went straight onto Swedish radio which was a huge thing for me. I never expected it do do so well.”

Who were your early DJ heroes?

“People like I mentioned before, a lot of deeper stuff and DJs like Hernan Cattaneo, Sasha, Ritchie Hawtin.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

Where have been the big gigs for you this summer. Where has gone mental?

“Roskilde has definitely been one of the best gigs this summer, I don’t know the exact the count but it was probably 15000 people. The crowd was going crazy for one and a half hours, I had the time of my life!!!”

What is the record that changed your life?

“There are many but The Knife – ‘Silent Shout’ is definitely one!”

You once infamously said…”I want to provoke a reaction, whether it’s positive or not. It’s more fun to have someone say ‘this sucks’ than ‘well, this nice’. Has that philosophy ever got you into trouble?

“Haha, no never, it’s more about my music though, I just don’t want to do something plain and boring! I want people to be like that sounds fresh!”

You have played all sorts of dance music genres over the years from hip hop to techno and house. Away from EDM, what sort of artists are you digging at the moment?

“I really like Band Of Horses but I can never decide! It’s hard for me to find a band that I like everything with. I mostly collect great songs! The one band I can listen to for hours is The Doors!!”

What has been the weirdest request you have received whilst DJing?

“A couple of years ago I got the request, ‘do you have something you can dance to???’.”

You only choose the artists to remix that you feel comfortable with, Britney, Roger Sanchez and PNAU have all been treated to the magic Lux rework. Who have you turned down?

“I always take remix requests seriously, I listen a lot and then I decide. I have turned down a lot of remixes, everything from Kelly Clarkson to less famous artists, sometimes I just don’t know what to do with the song even if I like it or there is just no time! Now I try to choose more what I want to remix, I feel that when I do that the remix is coming out much better and I play it way much more!”

And finally, how is your coke addiction going? How many cans are you down to a day now…?

“Haha, that just sounds so wrong!! Well I guess at least three!!”
