Back to Mine With Stillhound

Scottish late night beats taking you through ’til dawn

Set for release on 3rd August, Scottish three-piece Stillhound’s 2nd single ‘Think This Way’ is a masterclass in dreamy-electronica, blending soothing piano chords with layered vocals and atmospheric guitar riffs. The four-piece, consisting of school friends Fergus Cook, Laurie Corlett-Donald, Dave Lloyd and latest addition Cat Myers developed their sound whilst locked away in various mountain lodges in their homeland taking inspiration from art, geography and the far flung soundscapes created by Boards of Canada to the pop aesthetic of Tears for Fears.
The first single ’Seethe Unseen’ emerged from a darker side of their repertoire, showcasing their glistening and emotive electronica with digital textures and sounds, accompanied by a driving beat. Stillhound’s live show remains under wraps but with a handful of tracks waiting to be unleashed, they look ready to pick up the electronic-pop mantle and make 2015 their own.

Mac Demarco – Chamber of Reflection
Sometimes after a good night out we all find ourselves in a chamber of reflection, luckily Mac Demarco helps us come through unscaved.

Tame Impala – Cause I’m a Man
This is always a good one to calm down to. Also recently at a party Dave from the band tried to do some gymnastics on the drop of this song which resulted in a fair amount of hilarity…

Kollektiv Turmstrasse – Schwindilig
This is a good one to put on when you get home with a couple of friends at 5 am to try and continue to keep the night going, normally resulting in you all falling asleep in each others arms, in a good way.

The Field – A Paw in My Face
This one is great for the walk home after, especially if the sun is coming up and you happen to be walking through a park, along a beach or just through town.

Evenings – Softly We Go
This is a good one to fall asleep to, especially if your head is a bit spent from listening and raving to minimal techno all night.

Kiasmos – Lit
This is my favourite tune to end a dj set to. It starts very quietly but then gives the impression that is going to lift you up again but then gently eases you out with a lot of reverb and sends you stumbling out into the streets making your way home.

Jon Hopkins – Abandon Window
This is a good one to put on the walk home after a night that may not have quite ended how you wanted it to. I.e you have had an argument, lost your phone or had far too many tequila’s and feel like the world may indeed end.

Chemical Brothers – Surface to Air
I have seen the Chemical Brothers close a few festivals in my life and they once played this song as a set ender. I will alway remember being on someones shoulders and looking around at about 20,000 odd people seemingly totally captivated by what was going on, a brilliant end!

Sun Kil Moon  Alesund
This is probably not a great one to listen to but I had to put it in here mainly because there have been a few times where after a night out I have found myself sitting in the dark listening to this with my headphones in. Sometimes we just need to reflect on what has happened during the night by ourselves while listening to Mark Kozelak, or maybe that is just me…

Foals – Moon
This is possibly one of the best/my most listened to songs after a night out. It works in any occasion by you sad, elated, still in party mode, coming down off illicit substances. The final 2 minutes are absolutely perfect for me.

STILLHOUND – ‘SEETHE UNSEEN’

Stillhound released their debut single last month, showcasing a unique blend of atmospheric pop and emotive electronica. ’Seethe Unseen’ plots a marker in time for the Scottish four-piece consisting of school friends Fergus Cook, Laurie Corlett-Donald, Dave Lloyd and latest addition Cat Myers, having spent the last year in various studios and mountain lodges tirelessly developing their sound.

The glistening and emotive electronica displayed on ’Seeth Unseen’ draws influences from multiple faucets of music and blending it into an original form. Digital textures and sounds are accompanied by a driving beat with the vocals creating a beautifully bleak outlook that draws from the song’s landscape.

The video, directed by Gareth Goodlad for On Red was fittingly filmed in the Scottish Highlands and features Fergus Cook from the band. Inspired by the artwork for the Seethe Unseen single by Danny Cook, here are a few words from the singer:

I’m forever wrestling the feeling I’ve been stuck in the same place far too long. Day in day out, literally doing circles to work and back. The scenery becomes painfully uninspiring and falling out of love with your surroundings inevitable.

‘Shifting environments and landscapes were also being explored throughout the album artwork and naturally informed our choice of location for the video. Out with the artwork for ‘Seethe Unseen’, Daniel Cook had concocted a plethora of surreal mountainscapes and cliff faces that were employed heavily to build an ever changing and conflicted world’
