Julian Jeweil

World exclusive with techno’s man of the moment

Interview by Dan Prince

Julian a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD … You’ve recently completed touring North & South America, how did it all go?

The tour went great! I had tons of fun every single time I performed, just like every time I play in these countries. It’s always such a pleasure to play there!!! I brought back with me so many good vibes.

What is the best piece of music you have heard today?

This morning when I woke up, I listened to Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’, I worship this song.

Looking back at 2015 for a moment you must be overjoyed, a great year rounded off by scooping Beatport’s best selling techno act of the year fending off the likes of Alberto Luiz, Maceo Plex and Alan Fitzpatrick by miles…what are you most proud of from 2015?

Oh my goodness, I’m super happy about it!! In my opinion, 2015 was a great year for techno because an enormous amount of really good tracks was released by so many different artists.

Word on the street is that you have some new releases coming out on FORM Music soon, what can you tell us about this and any other new music coming our way…?

Your sources are right. I’m currently working on a new EP on Form music; other projects are also in preparation. Also, I’ve just completed a series of remixes for Matador, Dub fire & Oliver Huntemann!

It was a friend of yours when you were 16 that first introduced you to techno when transforming your bedroom into a dancefloor by spinning Dave Clarke’s Red 1 and Red 2 to you. What music were you into before that life changing day…

Well, back in the day I used to listen to lots of different stuff: Trip-Hop, Hip-Hop, alternative rock, etc.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in your life and how did you overcome it?

I’m not really sure, but I vividly remember the last mistake I made, and that was spilling beer on my equipment.

Some fellow producers you are loving at the moment with their music…

At the moment, I really dig Loco and Jam, Pig &  Dan, Matador and Mladen Tomic amongst others…

Which famous person would you most like to see play you in a film?

Jason Statham, because we’ve got the same hairstyle LOL

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

Fifth Gear de Bart Skills – Drumcode

Black Mamba de Kaiserdisco – 100% Pure

Confused (Original Mix) Sinisa Tamamovic – Yoshitoshi Recordings

Highway No. 4 (Skober Remix) Monika Kruse, Voodooamt – Terminal M

Rights for Men (Young Male Remix) Spencer Parker – Work Them Records

I love playing these tracks during my performances. They’re super-efficient and catchy, works all the time.

What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

It’s really tough to answer this question. What I know is, is that the biggest risk to take is not to take any.

If Julian Jeweil had not become a musician he would have been a…

A graphic designer!

And finally…a piece of advice can you give to the thousands of aspiring Julian Jeweils reading this wanting to follow in your footsteps?

To always stay determined, to always believe in their music because there’s room for everyone.
