The Liverpool underground don releases brand new tune

Krissy welcome to DMCWORLD towers young man, where in the world are you right now?

“I’m at home in South West London!”

A brand new single coming out ‘Beamer’ featuring UK grime hero Kano…tell us about the tune…

“I made the beat a while ago and I thought that someone like Kano would be perfect for the beat and sure enough a few months later it happened! It was a blessing because I wasn’t going to keep the original track at first.”

It sounds like you come from a very cool family. Any mum who buys their son a Dr Dre album at the age of 8 is fine by us! Were you brought up in a musical family…

“Not really! I remember my dad listening to bits of techno and hip hop when I was younger but nothing major really, my mum or dad can’t play instruments or anything. But growing up listening to Orbital and Ludacris via my dad was always pretty cool.”

Who were the other 90s hip hop artists that heavily influenced you growing up?

“I really like DJ Premier and still do, I don’t think he’s ever made a bad record. I love how he sticks to his style even if he’s making a pop record for Christina Aguilera or something. I really like Nas too, I had a lot of his albums. I saw him perform Represent, Nas Is Like etc to about 200 people in London a few weeks back, I was so starstruck.”

What was the record that changed your life?

“‘Diesel Power’ by The Prodigy. I remember my uncle showing me that for the first time, it was the best track in the world to me for about 3 years.”

Tell us about your uncle’s recording studio which you had access to, what went on in there?

“He had always made music from as far back as I could remember, so when I started getting into the production side of the music I was listening to, I just started going there a lot. I still go there every time I’m back up North – I think he will always have a better studio than me.”

I think an artist’s first gig is usually pretty crap, your first live appearance wasn’t one of your best huh?

“I think it was in a pub somewhere in Liverpool, do I need to say anymore?!”

How did the hook up with Sinden happen, was it a case of just hassling the poor guy?!

“Yes!! Haha. It was over MySpace I think, I was just sending him a lot of my old music and he played one of them on his radio show. After that we just kept in touch, and I think I went to one of the Count and Sinden gigs in Liverpool to meet him.”

Who are the artists around today that you giving high fives to at the moment?

“I really like S-Type. He’s part of the LuckyMe family and he’s such an underrated producer. He has an EP coming very soon which is seriously next level. I also really like Dismantle. His tracks are so perfect to play anywhere, whether it’s to 5,000 people at a festival or 200 people in little club they always go down so well.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning right now?

KW Griff – Bring In The Katz – Lvis 1990 Remix
Azeaia Banks – Liquorice
Bambounou – Deepstaria
Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop Era – Far Out
R1 Ryders – Basswave
Flosstradamus – Underground
Kanye West – Mercy
D.O.K – Omg
TNGHT – Gooo
Kanye West – Slow Jams Instrumental

You’ve been on tour for most of the year playing some gigs around Europe, how did they go – where were the highlights?

“They were all wicked! I really enjoyed Amsterdam though, I’ve never been there before so it was great to have such a good show there on the first night.”

A massive gig coming up next week at the mighty Creamfields, who will you be checking out over the weekend?

“Yup! Is Steve Angello playing? I always like going to see him play. I really like the line-up on the AMP stage to be honest, it’s gonna be good to see the Chemical Brothers DJ. I’ve never seen them live before.”

Are you big mates with the Cream posse?

“I don’t know them! I went to Cream once when I was 16 without ID and got turned away at the door in front of about 500 people in the queue, which was great… David Guetta was playing that night anyway, so I’m not even sure why I was there.”

You said last year that “the Liverpool scene is good, but it’s not me”. What did you mean by that?

“I don’t really remember saying that to be honest, ha! Maybe I just meant that I never really found anything I was totally 100 per cent into in Liverpool. But listening to hip hop and being forced to go to big techno nights was maybe a good thing for me!”

And finally, what is coming next from you studio wise…

“I’ve been doing a few exciting remixes lately which has been nice. I’m getting back in and doing some more club orientated stuff though, time to work on another EP I think!”
