Manhattan Clique

What’s The Best Night Out You’ve ever Had?
Most long forgotten in a intoxicated haze, but was in Moscow DJing a few weeks ago and ended up partying on the roof at the launch of a superclub that wasn’t quite built.  Very surreal overlooking the Volga surrounded by oligarchs.

What’s Your Favourite Club?
Any one we’re playing in – we originally took up DJing because there was no-one playing our take on classic and current electro.  We love Dynamite Boogaloo at Audio in Brighton.

What’s Your Favourite Record Of All-time?
Probably ‘Dare’ and its remix cousin ‘Love & Dancing’ by Human League.  The benchmark of electro pop in 1981, and still sounding fresh as a daisy.

What Record Can’t You Stand?
Most of the watered down r’n’b pop nonsense that clogs up the charts.  Any talentless X Factor rubbish as well.

What Record Did You Lose Your Virginity Too?
I think it was the album Music For The Masses by Depeche Mode.

What Was The Last Record You Bought?
The Cure new album re-masters – amazing!

Name Three Of Your Biggest Influences…
The B-52’s, Soft Cell, Mirwais

Who Would Play You In ‘Manhattan Clique’?
Pierce Brosnan.  They should have let him do another Bond.

What’s Your Dream?
To go to space (not the club!)

How Do You Escape?
Legally? A great pub with Black Sheep Bitter on tap, followed by a stroll up the mountains.

What Is Your Favourite Possession?
It has got to be our collection of vintage synths and ‘Electric Blue’ Moog.

What Is Your Life Philosophy?
Work and play just about hard enough to be able to do a lot of both successfully.

What’s In Your Pockets?
A mobile, several sets of keys and a pair of mirrored aviators.

If You Were An Animal, What Animal and Why?
A cat – to get some sleep

You Are Having A Party, Whom Dead Or Alive Is On The Guest List?
Bill Clinton – for a laugh
John Belushi – for party tricks several
Amadeus Mozart – for a sing song
Oscar Wilde & friends – for some debauchery
A troop of dancing girls – ditto

When Was The Last Time You Embarrassed Yourself?
We were once barred from DJing in a club for singing over the records while blind drunk.

Tell Us Something That We Don’t Know About ‘Manhattan Clique’
We’ve just celebrated our first Number One with our Moby production, albeit in France!

Robopop: The Return, mixed by Manhattan Clique, is out now on Planet Clique Records.  Manhattan Clique are Philip Larsen and Chris Smith.  As well as providing DJ mixing duties on ‘Robopop – The Return’, the duo run new electro label Planet Clique, have remixed the likes of Goldfrapp, Fischerspooner, Moby and Stereophonics, and DJ all over the world.
