Stanton Warriors

The beat kings cutting it up again with yet another musical direction

Interview : Dan Prince

Dom welcome back to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you right now?

“Deep in the forest of Michigan, at a festival called Bass Camp…”

Yet again The Stantons change the stakes with another fresh sound courtesy of your new single ‘Cut Me Up’. Talk us through the tune…

“It’s a track we made for our DJ sets primarily, it always goes off whenever we play it, so we thought we’d give it a proper release.  It’s also good to show how we do crossover over different genres in our DJ sets and productions.”

‘Cut Me Up’ certainly takes on a new direction for you guys, something you are never afraid to do. What are your thoughts on the current scene, there are without doubt lots of exciting new producers coming through…

“In the world of uptempo non 4/4 dance music, there is a lot to choose from. The likes of Black Butter, Digital Soundboy, Dirtybird etc are all putting out fresh and interesting tracks which fit right into what we do.”

Remix duties on the single come triple whammied. Why did you pick these particular dudes to rework your pride and joy?

“We chose these guys because we liked what they were doing, the  felt innovative and interesting as producers, who could push the tracks into difference arenas.  Which they certainly have!”

I was rifling through some of your old interviews you did a few years back where you suggested the DMC’s had maybe reached a point of no return with our competitors pressing up their own records and the skill factor has diminished with the lack of changing records. The art form had to move on and has done with todays competitors utilising DVS. Would you still like a return to the old format?

“I guess new technology effects us all, so I’m not in the ‘vinyl only’ camp. I am however in the ‘at least show some skill’ camp, so no sync button at the DMC competitions please!”

The single has been happily been doing damage on festival stages across the world this summer, from Coachella to Glastonbury. What has been the funniest festival story this year…

“This has probably been the busiest year ever festival wise. Glasto was good, although Mark got mad drunk towards the end of the set which was entertaining. Playing the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco last week was pretty funny, as we had to finish 30 mins early because Paul McCartney wanted all stages shut down, for when he went on the main stage! Turned off by a Beatle!”

Every weekend you are rocking some field or beach around the world…Kazantip Republic looked mental! Where have been the big ones this long hot summer?

“Shambhala in Canada & Kazantip in the Ukraine have to be some of the most memorable parties ever . Amazing people and great sound systems, in absolutely stunning locations.”

You are renowned to fit in perfectly and basically piss on any house DJ on a festival bill. Has there been any occasions where you saw the running order and said to the promoter, nahh!

“We are put on so many interesting line ups from house to dubstep! I’m glad to say our sound seems to fit in anywhere, even rock festivals!”

As mentioned, you are in Michigan this week at Bass Camp…the last time you were there the police swarmed the club. What the hell happened?

“Detroit PD closed the party down because a 20yr old drank a beer. Around thirty cops, mostly in balaclavas, unceremoniously shut it down. It was pretty over the top.”

Who are some of the young producers out there you are giving high fives to right now?

“Martin Horger from Germany and Mafia Kiss from the UK. Loving their productions, especially their beats.”

Yourself and Mark spend a LOT of time together. In the studio, on tour at the after party. Do you ever argue?

“Ha yes, but nothing gets done unless we both agree on something.”

What person from history would you like to have a beer with and why?

“Jesus Christ, just to see if he can actually walk on water after downing a few.”

If we came back to the Stantons after the club, what sort of Back To Mine tunes would you spin us to mellower the vibe?

“Lots of original, rare electro and deep-ass old electronic disco.  Get us to do a Back To Mine album and we’ll show you!”

Do you still get the obsessive Stanton fans following you about, are the tattoos and same faces in weird locations still on your case?

“Yes. 45 people now have permanent Stanton Warrior tattoos. Our fans are hardcore and we love em!”

And finally, You’ll get asked this lot, but does the new album look like it could be the best yet?

“Yes. For us, it’s something that is riding the current trend for all things new and bass-related.  We are lucky we get to play out every single weekend, so we can actually road-test all of the music and fine-tune bits if need be.”
