Watermät

Watermät returns with ‘Empire’. The French superstar goes Spinnin’ Deep…

Interview by Dan Prince

Dance music has never been the same since the rise of French DJ/Producer Watermät. Coming up as an underdog, although not a complete newbie, he’s by now turned the scene upside down with his completely original sound now entering a new chapter with ‘Empire’, a track based on overwhelming synth chords and invigorating vocals. The perfect anthem for when day makes its transition into night. And we are absolutely LOVING that Dionne Warwick sample…

Laurent a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD…where are you on this beautiful Spring day?

Hey Dan, at home in the south of France.

What is the best piece of new music you have heard since rolling out of bed?

As I’m answering my email during my breakfast, usually I don’t listen to music. But this morning I’ve listened to Sevendoors “Movement of Whale”, it’s not brand new but I love it!

So…a very exciting month stretches ahead of you with the release of your brand new track ‘Empire’ swinging our way on Spinnin’ Deep. “It takes deepness to another level” everyone is screaming. Love the sample, love the horns…please talk us through the production and history of the track…

I still love digging into old records for samples and found the sample of the track ‘Heartbreaker’ by Dione Warwick which I pitched down and chopped out. It went quite fast. 80% of the track was done in a couple of hours.

I am always interested whether superstar DJs tune into Pete Tong on Radio 1 when he premieres their track…

Of course, everybody is checking what Pete Tong is playing. He has been a big support to kick start “Bullit” and it’s always a good news when he supports my track.

Back in the 80s when ballads were played at nightclubs, Dionne Warwick’s ‘Heartbreaker’ was always a big favourite for the smoochers. When was the last time you had a slow dance in a public place?!?!?

Wow. It’s been so long I can’t remember!

A lot of your fans have been leaving messages about the track on social media – the most common phrase being “Watermät’s best yet”. Would you agree?

I’m happy to hear it. I cannot rank my own tracks. For me, they are all different and I just make sure I’m satisfied with the work release.

3 gigs this summer you CANNOT FUCKING WAIT FOR…

Tomorrowland, Creamfield, Pacha Ibiza…

And what have been some of the stand out gigs over the winter period? Brazil looked off the Richter Scale…

I’ve been to South America a lot this winter. Loved the vibe and the crowd. Kabalah festival in Brazil was great, zig zag in Paris, District 8 in Dublin (the Irish crowd is off the roof)…

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in your life and how did you overcome it?

Don’t have the feeling of having made big mistakes. Maybe being a studio producer a bit too long and not have started my own stuff and Watermät sooner. But that was my path to get where I’m here today.

Which famous person would you most like to see play you in a film?

I’m sure Ben Stiller would make a great performance of me as DJ.

What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

Becoming a father.

What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?

Becoming a father!

Are there any new territories/clubs/festivals you are playing at this year that remain a bit of a mystery?

To be honest I still feel a new comer and still have a lot of countries, festivals and clubs to discover. Second tour in US and first in Asia are coming this year and I’m very excited.

The big 5 tunes in your box this weekend…

– Freak Like Me – Lee Walker

Love this one, the bass sounds really powerful

– Raumakustik – Panther (Format:B rmx)

I really like both Format:B and Raumakustik work. Lot of energy in this one

– CamelPHat – Trip

I like how Camelphat is going more techhouse lately… The groove in this synth is just great!

– Riton – Rinse & Repeat Feat Kah-lo

OK this one is already like a hit, I like the vocal, very catchy

– Watermat – Empire

And finally – what is coming out next from you studio wise…?

Empire is on it’s way and a follow up will come round June. I take all the time I need to be happy with my work…
