Bugge Wesseltoft & Henrik Schwarz
Duo
Jazzland

If you’ve ever seen these two live you’ll have borne witness to the musical chemistry that exists between the free roaming piano of Bugge Wesseltoft and the deft programming work of Henrik Schwarz. The two make music that has its roots in jazz, but which takes in house and a deeper form of techno along the way. Some of the tracks are languid, others more energetic and driving, but each follows a fascinating discourse between the keyboard and the electronics, especially as Wesseltoft cleverly manipulates the piano keys to make strangely muted and more percussive sounds. Of the energetic tracks the most successful is ‘Leave My Head Alone Brain’, where the piano manipulations come into play, while the down tempo stuff is best characterized by opener ‘First Track’, presented in a recording live from Berlin that carries the spirit of improvisation present in the duo, as well as a certain edginess. Once again an instance of techno and jazz intersecting to good effect.
