Burnt Friedman – ‘Bokoboko’ – (Nonplace)

Burnt Friedman - BokobokoBurnt Friedmann’s fourth album for his own record label is a hypnotic listen that proves ideal for late nights. It’s also strongly percussive, as he and his Nu Dub Players bring everything but the kitchen sink in to some of the tracks, without ever loading the rhythms too heavily. This is especially effective on a track like ‘Uzu’, which has some really clever cross rhythms that turn what sounds like a fast track into a slow one, before then settling into a hypnotic groove. It’s this sort of play with rhythm, the use of field recordings and some other worldly sounds from Takeshi Nishimoto on the sarod (like a sitar) that make for an unusual but highly original piece of work.
