CRISPIN J GLOVER
WHICH WAY IS UP
ONE LITTLE INDIAN

One thing you can say about this man is that his musical taste is certainly varied; in fact it’s a multicoloured appetite, which, as he puts it, is a reaction against what a lot of house producers are doing at the moment. The angst gritty guitar strummed electro clasher opener ‘House Freak’, gives way to a reaffirmation of his punk roots with a strong cover of PiL’s ‘This Is Not A Love Song’ with Prince Julia doing her best John Lydon impersonation. But it’s not all punk-funk nostalgia, house don Louie Vega leads his support to the P-funked ‘Deeper Down Inside’, and Glover rehashes his Chicago roots with an equally strong update of Shay Jones’ ‘Are You Gonna Be There’, before diggin’ in the crates for Stevie Wonder samples (‘Peacemaker Blues’) and Quincy Jones basslines (‘Afro Boogie’). Kudos to the rock drummer-come-house producer’s manmade oasis in an otherwise desert landscape of 4/4 beats.
