Dark Sky – Imagin – (Monkeytown)

In case you don’t already know, Dark Sky are a London trio that formed in 2009 – and after tours and remixes for the likes of The XX and Kelis, ‘Imagin’ is their first album. It’s an unpredictable piece of work, which is meant as a compliment – because it shows the trio have a number of strings to their bow. In fact the record gets stronger as it goes on, with the three tracks featuring Cornelia offering some excellent, slightly edgy pop, and the vulnerable ‘Rainkist’ unexpectedly but effectively bringing dBridge to the fore. ‘Odyssey’ has some sharper synth outlines, and ‘Purple Clouds’ is a powerful sign-off, but most striking of all is ‘Manuka’, where Dark Sky head east to explore freeform percussion and more exotic melodies. These different styles fuse together really effectively, with a consistently imaginative approach to both vocal and instrumental music that suggests Dark Sky are definitely ones to watch.
