Many a ‘bands to watch’ list for 2010 contains the name Delphic, and here’s the reason why. The Manchester band form the next link in their city’s illustrious family tree, but manage to build on influences from the likes of the Stone Roses and New Order without making the debts too obvious. Songs like ‘Counterpoint’ and ‘This Momentary’ already hinted at a massive potential last year, and that standard is sustained through the whole album. The instrumental title track is a case in point, building to a monumental adrenalin rush against carefully studied breakbeats, while elsewhere the chattering keyboards and softly anthemic choruses are brilliantly realised. While affectionately casting an eye back in the direction of the Hacienda, this is forward thinking music whose rhythms drive the listener onwards and upwards. You could hardly have wished for more in a debut album.
