Foals
Total Life Forever
Transgressive

For their second album Foals have reigned in a bit of the appealing roughness that characterised their ‘Antidotes’ debut, but they have been careful not to make their brand of so-called ‘math rock’ too calculated. For all the intricate guitar loops and afro-influenced percussion, this is music with deep and meaningful vocals from Yannis . Thoughtful songs such as ‘Black Gold’ pack an emotive punch, while the heady rush of ‘This Orient’ was clearly not meant to be enjoyed sitting down. The signs are Foals have refined their sound a bit, but not compromised their pioneering spirits – and as a result they stand on the verge of greatness.
