JOHN FOXX AND THE MATHS ‘EVIDENCE’ (METAMATIC)

There is absolutely no stopping John Foxx at the moment, and even though this album might first come across as an ‘odds and ends’ round up of works he’s done recently, it turns in to a really good listen from start to finish. That is because Foxx and The Maths (aka Benge and a few guests) are working in several different styles at the moment, and are able to turn their hands from softly brushed electronica (the floated vocal of Gazelle Twin being a really good example) to something much tougher where the analogue synths can really be pressed into action. Bookmarking the collection are two mixes of ‘I Talk’, with the cool but tough beats of Matthew Dear’s interpretation living long in the memory. ‘Evidence’ itself is a very fine Foxx song, and his cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Have A Cigar’ is really well chosen and timed, even now giving a caustic middle finger to the workings of the music industry. Ever since he started making music John Foxx has always sounded contemporary – and here, more than 35 years on, that remains the case. As a consequence ‘Evidence’ is a mandatory listen for long time followers of Foxx and electronic music – but also for those new to the form.
