Sebastien Tellier – ‘My God Is Blue’ – (Record Makers)

They don’t come cooler than Sebastien Tellier – and ‘My God Is Blue’, his latest, brings together everything that makes him such an irresistible force. There’s a knowing way about his slowed down disco jams that is effortlessly seductive but completely uplifting. With its slinky funk, 4 works an absolute treat, while 6 goes for a big cinematic production that most vocalists wouldn’t dare try. Tellier isn’t most vocalists though, and his murmured lyrics here are sometimes a bit difficult to pick up, but the sentiment is always there. He’s not afraid of introducing the odd Prince-like guitar solo, or a sultry keyboard wig-out, but at all times this album just reeks of class and style. It’s every bit as good as his last one – not quite as immediate, but grows on you like well worn facial hair!
