Various Artists – ‘Contemporary’ – (Tartelet Records)

Copenhagen label Tartelet Records have sneaked out a gem with this ten track compilation of previously unreleased tracks, designed to reflect their sound of 2012. It’s well planned and executed, with the subtle funk of Muff Deep and Kenton Slash Demon (who are two of When Saints Go Machine) getting us off to an effortless start, the fat bass sound of the latter’s ‘Daemon’ working a treat. Brandt Brauer Frick are included, and their style is easy to spot on ‘Melancholie II’, that familiar way of working organic sounds and grooves increasingly successful, while Acid Woman’s ‘No Country For Old Men’ presents a more driving, immediate sound. If you’re after something a little different in the field of electronica, this is a good way in to a label that is another example of the talent at work in Denmark at the moment.
