Singers & Players – War Of Words – (On-U Sound)

This album was originally released on NYC‘s infamous 99 Records way back in 1981 and yet still sounds as magical in 2015. Conjuring up the rhythms alongside Jamaican deejays Prince Far I and Jah Woosh, plus members of the Arabs and Roots Radics, are Keith Levene (Public Image Limited) and Ari Up from The Slits also making their presence felt. The key lies not only in the soul of the vocals but also in the production values added to an alternative way at looking into time signatures and arrangements, which feel so much looser than the stricter structures of House and Techno. For inspiration alone, or indeed for a fresh view of things, ‘War Of Words’ opens up a world of possibilities in terms of sculpting sight and sound.
