V/A – The 90s (Hot Mom USA)

NY’s Hot Mom USA just celebrated their one year anniversary and they show no sign of losing steam. For their 9th release, the imprint run by DJ Shiftee and Alex Burkat, has compiled 11 tracks celebrating both the 90s era vibe and the 90s tempo range. Look for this to hit the streets on Monday June 3rd.

Overall the majority of the album focuses on heady vibe out tracks, I would recommend breaking out some fine ganja and blazing out while bobbin’ ya head to the bassy beats. Some of the highlights of this release include Pawn’s “Lean4” which is a real fresh and eccentric riddim that sucks me in every time I listen. Manikan & Taste Tester’s “Work Your Body” is the most club oriented track on the compilation, with the Atlanta producers showing you they definitely know how to work you into a frenzy on the dancefloor. Philadelphia homie Siyoung drops the melodic and groovy “School Day,” which has a real genuine heartfelt quality. Probably my favorite joint on the compilation is “Thumbsucker” from Astrolith. This one was kind of a surprise to me as I wasn’t familiar with the producer, but I’m real enamored with this track. It sorta reminds me of the ‘Spy Hunter’ video game soundtrack, but sexier, weirder and harder all at the same damn time.

Besides the cover art, in all reality there is not much 90s era references to the actual music. But hey, who cares. I do wish there was a few more tracks though, at 11 songs I’m left wanting a little bit more material.

4 out of 5 stars
