Various Artists – DJ Kicks: Brandt Brauer Frick

Brandt Brauer Frick’s contribution to DJ Kicks is an instinctive one, recorded with dub plates and vinyl in the space of a single day at the Watergate album in Berlin. It is a very wide ranging collection of 28 tracks, with three provided by the band themselves, then five others from artists connected to the band. A homemade operation, then, and one that does dart around a bit at the start, with notable inclusions from Theo Parrish and William Onyeabor, whose ‘Better Change Your Mind’ seems utterly relevant with its observations on the superpowers. There are stylistic jumps, with the speed garage style of Kingdom’s ‘Stalker Ha’ leading on to Alfabet’s ‘Lap The Music’, which sweeps forwards, and the cracking burst of funkier house that is DJ Do Bass’s ‘To Catchy’. From then on the mix is unstoppable, percussive, driving and packed full of riffs – just like a BBF concert in fact, thrills and spills to the very end!
