Various Artists – Kitsuné New Faces – Kitsuné

Kitsuné’s New Faces comp is a great way of bringing in a whole raft of previously unheard talent – and the wide range of the music on offer here is also a big plus. Perhaps because of the wide range not all of the newcomers are wholly successful, and I did think that the admittedly admirable blues of Southern was miscast. There is also a surprising amount of falsetto-led electro productions, but they are by and large of a high standard. The big winners here were the Antimatter People with the breezy, slightly psychedelic ‘Mossy Grounds’, and the intriguing fragile textures ‘Never Love’ from Lxury, endorsed by Disclosure. Yet the real standout track for me was from the London quintet ‘Years & Years’, whose ‘Real’ is an unconventional but emotional song, one that fans of Jamie Lidell’s left of centre productions would love. Proof then that these compilations are well worth exploring – there are hidden gems to be found for sure.
