Although there are a lot of compilations of this type knocking around, it’s still fascinating to pick through the records that have shaped the favourite son of French dance music. No surprises on the inclusion of Serge Gainsbourg, Miles Davis and Can – Davis’s ‘Black Satin’ a weird and wonderful track. Less expected is the appearance of Van Morrison, whose harmonica laden ‘TB Sheets’ makes a brave and lengthy opener. Elsewhere there’s more jazz, soul, funk and disco – a kaleidoscope of colour and texture. This is a captivating insight, and the best ‘Lifestyles’ compilation so far.
