Various Artists – Slam Presents Glasgow: Transmissions – (Soma)

After what is arguably their best album, ‘Reverse Proceed’, Slam get back to record label business with a collection of techno talent from Glasgow and beyond. Two soothing tracks welcome us in – the wide open ‘Intro’ from Edit Select and the subtle groove of Puddledub’s ‘Circling’. After that, though, things get cranked up – either through the tough, sharpened beats of Petrichor’s ‘State Function’ or Slam’s own, percussive ‘Friction’. Gary Beck, Animal Farm and Clouds occupy the faster end of the spectrum with nippy beats and lean, no nonsense riffing, while Deepbass – a new name – impresses with ‘Themis’, a cut with a set of loops that are difficult to pin down rhythmically but which somehow work. A compilation with high standards but also one that shows the sheer variety of techno on offer in Glasgow at the moment. It’s good to see Soma still on such good form.
