It took Ulrich Schnauss a long time to complete his latest album, as early
pirated download versions of it were not to his satisfaction. Since then the
overall sound of the record has been sorted out – and as listens to the
updated material confirm, the effort was well worth it. Whilst being
essentially a chillout album, ‘Goodbye’ never loses its focus, and the
loosely song-based tracks work really well with subtle but memorable lyrical
hooks. It’s in the synthesized sound where this album excels, though –
‘Shine’ and ‘Stars’ are particularly strong here – and for large parts of
his music you’ll be happy to drift in and out of focus, enjoying the
cascades of colour the Berliner so readily applies.
