Various Artists – Trevor Jackson Presents: Science Fiction Dancehall Classics – (On-U Sound)

Trevor Jackson is a reliable source of the unexpected, the former Playgroup maestro a found of musical information. Here he collects what he describes as ‘electro-fried avant-garde’ from the On-U Sound vaults, and has come up with a group of intoxicating sounds, tracks that do not really conform to any particular style. Some are challenging – the chaotic alternate version of The Circuit’s ‘Loudspeaker’ a case in point – while others mix a heady blend of fast and slow cross rhythms, such as African Head Charge’s ‘Off The Beaten Track’, or even mad animal sounds, such as the New Age Steppers’ ‘Animal Space’. Jackson includes an important unreleased track from Neneh Cherry, ‘Dead Come Alive’ being one of her earliest bits of work with The Circuit, and along with 26 other tracks this is given handsome and thorough annotation in the sleeve notes. Jackson has really pulled a rabbit out of the hat here, showing his love for music that is consistently invigorating and challenging.
