Various Artists – Watergate 15 Mixed By Kerri Chandler – Watergate

A big and very intriguing name for the latest in the Watergate series, which is mixed live and direct. It’s good to hear, as so many DJ mixes overdo their computer programming and end up too clinical. Having a more human approach works well and translates to the music too. Kerri Chandler has always covered a nice line between classic house and techno in his mixes, and does so here too, largely verging on the deep side of things. He chooses mostly new stuff, including a couple of excellent productions of his own – ‘Think of Something’, which bounces along with a really excellent beat, and the ultra-new ‘Mama’, recorded for this mix with Jerome Sydenham, which turns a really nice guitar line with a brief spoken word breakdown. The deepness spreads to the classy Chris Lattner remix of Huxley’s ‘Like One’ and a really lovely, woozy take on Renato Figoli’s ‘Underpool’ from Losoul. Good vibes abound – a bit spiritual here, a bit dubby there – and the mix heads to a really affirmative finish with Real Cool and Tom Demac. Chandler’s instincts are strong as ever, both in track selection and mixing, giving him and Watergate another winner on their hands.
