It’s been quite a while since Soma’s finest house act did their Darkroom Dubs thing on CD, but here they return on fighting good form. The sound retains something of the West Coast warmth the original did, but this is a meaner animal than the first and the beats are noticeably tougher, which makes for a much more rewarding experience as the mix progresses. Marc Poppcke’s ‘Freaks’ is especially good, all bassline power, leading to similarly strong tracks from Liapin (‘Mandan’) and Feygin (‘Chisel’). Having laid out the blueprint with some quite chilled opening tracks, the impact of these tougher cuts is well judged – and creates a proper sense of journeying through the mix. Excellent stuff – and let’s hope the third in the series is much sooner to arrive!
